American River,a peaceful and unspoilt fishing village' nestled on a sheltered inlet which ultimately connects Eastern Cove with the aquatic reserve of Pelican Lagoon. SCHOOLHOUSE COTTAGE located across from the foreshore of the premier harbour for boating and recreational fishing on the Island makes it a 'must' for your Kangaroo Island holiday.
The calm waters are a haven for birds, fish and are ideal for your marine adventures all year round.
Kayaking is ideally suited to this area - calm and pristine. With the fishing spots being only a stone's throw away, take a line with you and try your luck. Being midway between Penneshaw and Kingscote, you are also well-positioned for exploring the rest of Kangaroo Island.
The Cottage - early last century it was once the local school - has been upgraded in a style sympathetic to the original. Accommodation is for up to 6 people in three bedrooms (queen, double and twin). You will find a well-appointed kitchen, spacious eating area, cosy lounge, air-conditioning and a north facing outdoor patio with BBQ and views over The River and Eastern Cove. We are pet friendly - small to medium sized well-behaved dogs are welcome on request and the property is fully enclosed.
You can throw in a line off the wharf for your dinner or perhaps you might like to buy some freshly harvested local oysters. Why nottry one of the fishing charters, operated by locals.
A rich and varied bird population thrives on both sea and land - from Pelicans and Swans, Cape Barren Geese and Ibis, to the likes of the small and beautiful Splendid Blue Wren in the garden. The rare Glossy Black Cockatoo with its characteristic red tail panel is also an occasional visitor. There are scenic walking trails along the river where you can see Tammar Wallabies, Possums, Echidnas etc. The wallabies are known to graze the grassy verges of the town's streets in the evenings. The remains of a chinese fish factory can be visited on one of these walks.
WIFI - there is 30 gb free WIFI access per month. Coffee plunger in the kitchen.
“We were pleased that despite being an old cottage the place was clean, tidy, and all facilities such as the fridge were modern and in excellent working order. The host provided us tennis rackets so we could make use of the courts just across the road. It is a very small and peaceful town, coffee shop served quality coffee, and post office had an assortment of general goods. Not the best swimming beach, but the snorkelling was fun. We all enjoyed our stay and would do it again. Jason January 2019
“We really enjoyed our 5 days at the Schoolhouse Cottage. It’s location is lovely, looking out over the water with access to a tennis court/basketball court just across the road. We enjoyed our coffee
s at the Deck Cafe and of course the fresh oysters from just next door. The cottage is well equipped with both indoor and outdoor seating options. American River is a wonderful place for a quiet relaxing break but within easy access to all that KI offers.” Peter September 2018
We had the best time on KI. Chose a fantastic weekend weatherise, and saw lots of the local attractions over the five days and four nights we were there. Fran, Oct 2017
